How to Get the Best Out of a Storm Damage Insurance Claim

Even if you have not had to file a storm damage insurance claim, understanding the process can be helpful in the event that you need to file one. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Progressive Remodeling & Roofing Company shares an overview of the process and how you can get the best results out of it.

Contain the Damage

Your first order of business after a storm hits is to contain the extent of the damage. In case of flooding, close the water supply and move valuables to one of the upper-story rooms. Find out if there are leaks coming through the ceiling. As much as possible, inspect the roof from the outdoors visually. At this point, parts of the roof may have become structurally compromised and may lead to accidents if you climb it.

Document the Damage

Thanks to smartphones, it’s never been easier to document anything. It may be necessary to move some of the things in your home to create a path and to remove hazards such as broken glass. But before you do, make sure you take photos and videos of them. This would show your insurance provider what the actual state of your home would be right after the storm hit. Don’t throw anything away just yet: make a list of all damaged items, where you purchased them, and what it would cost to replace them. This can also help your roofing and restoration contractor in calculating the extent of roof repairs that will need to be done.

Call Your Insurance Provider and Roofing Contractor

Once you’re done with your documentation—and after making sure your family is safe and has shelter—your first two phone calls should go to your insurance provider and your roofing contractor. Your insurance provider has to inspect the extent of the damage, review your documentation, and file your claim as soon as possible. Your roofing contractor has to inspect the extent of the damage independently, write an estimate, and submit it to your insurance provider.

Having your roofer perform an independent inspection is a form of check and balance: your roofer would know what to look for and could provide an informed assessment of your roof’s condition. They also serve as a second set of eyes in case your insurance adjuster misses important details.
