The Essential Parts of an Asphalt Shingle Roof

The roof is a complex structure designed to protect your home from the harsh weather. In order to make sure it stays in top condition, you need a deeper understanding of how your roof “works”. The more you know about your roof, the easier it is to spot early signs of trouble and prevent costly repairs in the future. As the leading roof replacement experts in the area, we’re giving you a quick guide to the major components that make up your home’s roofing system.

The Essential Parts of an Asphalt Shingle Roof

Shingles

The topmost part of the roofing system is composed of the actual shingles; the main roofing material. Shingles can either be simple three-tab shingles, architectural shingles, or high-end dimensional architectural shingles. Three-tab shingles are the most affordable, while high-end dimensional shingles are the most expensive and durable, with architectural shingles somewhere in between.

Underlayment

Because the surface is not perfectly waterproof, a roofing system needs a watertight layer just underneath the shingles. The underlayment can be considered the main waterproofing component of the roof. Tears and gaps in the underlayment can pose a serious threat to the roof and will require immediate roof repairs.

Deck and Support Structures

The deck and support structures serve as the main platform of the other roofing components. The deck is made of plywood, vinyl, or even composite, while the support structures are made of wood or metal. Wider roofs tend to have trusses as support structures, while high-pitched and smaller roofs have rafters to maintain the roof’s shape.

Soffit and Fascia

roofing contractor will install these two components if your roof has an overhanging section. The soffit is found underneath the overhanging parts of the roof. Often made of plywood, thin composite sheets, or hard plastic, the soffit is basically an “outdoor” ceiling. The soffit may also have holes to accommodate the installation of outdoor lighting. On the other hand, the fascia is a vertical strip usually made of wood or composite that covers the side of the roof while also serving as an anchor point for the gutters.
